PSAT'S FREE NEXT YEAR! MAYOR SUCCEEDS IN OFFERING WHS STUDENTS NO-COST PSAT EXAMS
At the urging of the Mayor and after consultation with Chairman George Lacouture of the School Committee and Patrick McGee, Acting Superintendent, any student in the Woonsocket School system in grades 10 and 11 who wishes to take the PSAT test will be able to do so at no cost to the student or their families. The program will take effect in the 2015-2016 school year.
“I am extremely pleased that after speaking with Brad Peryea, Finance Director, the Education Department was able to provide funds for this test at an estimated cost of approximately $10-12K, the total cost to administer the test to a projected eligible school population. It will give all students an opportunity to take the test, learn from the experience, and hopefully be better prepared and more comfortable when they take the SAT test,” Mayor Baldelli-Hunt noted.
The PSAT is administered to help gauge a student’s ability to get into college and is a rite of passage for many students who are contemplating a post secondary education. “While teaching at Woonsocket High School in the Mathematics Department, we encouraged 10th and 11th graders to take this test prior to the SAT. The opportunity to have this test available at no cost to the student or their families will provide ALL of our students with an opportunity to succeed,” Chairman Lacouture stated.
“We need to ensure that our students are ready to succeed. While the test cost is relatively low, I recognize that to some students and their families, even a modest cost may be a barrier for them to take the test. Now that the financial barrier is lifted, I would encourage every eligible student to take advantage of this budget outlay and to take the test,” Mayor Baldelli-Hunt stated.
