GET INVOLVED WITH THE
S.M.I.L.E.
(SCIENCE AND MATH INVESTIGATIVE LEARNING EXPERIENCES)
PROGRAM
Take part in hands-on cutting edge Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. Go on interesting field trips. Visit URI (University of Rhode Island) and participate in the Engineering Challenge Weekend in March. College guidance is available. Possibly receive a small college scholarship. Participation looks great on applications. Contact Mrs. Locke in Room 103. Bring a friend! A field trip to go trawling is scheduled for October 22.
The SMILE Club is currently doing its stewardship project for 2016. They are making 20 birdhouses some of which will be posted throughout Cass Park and the remaining ones will be donated to the Audubon Society. They are learning about how basic carpentry and birding. Most of the houses are made for some song birds but they are also making boxes for owls and ducks.

S.M.I.L.E. TRAWLING FIELD TRIP ON OCTOBER 22
On Thursday, October 22, the Woonsocket S.M.I.L.E. Club took a trip to Johnson and Wales in Providence R.I. When we arrived at the university we headed for the boat house to get life vests and boots that we would need later on. When we got on the boat they told us the rules and where we were. We went from the top of Narragansett Bay down to Prudence Island. On the way we learned a few things about the kind of water in the bay and some of the ocean life. The bay is 25 miles long and 10 miles wide. There are three different layers in the water in which different ocean life live in. We learned about the top and bottom layers-the top layer is where all the plankton live. The bottom layer is where fish and crabs live.
Before we got to the island we stopped and did a few experiments to test the waters temperature, salinity (how much salt is in the water), and dissolved oxygen (oxygen the fish breath in). After that we ate lunch while two instructors threw a net overboard so we could drag it along the bottom of the bay to collect plants and animals. When we finished we had to pull up the net (and it was very heavy!) and they put the contents in two containers with water. We caught fish, crab, flonder, seaweed, and snails. When we got the the island we had to put on our boots and walk to a salt marsh. The salt marsh is very muddy. The mud is interesting because it takes a long time for it to be created. The salt marsh is very important because animals can live in there; if water levels rise and flood, the salt marsh acts like a sponge. We then got to collect different plants and animals found in the salt marsh. We found many crabs and shells. After that muddy mess we walked to the beach right next to the marsh and collected signs that there was life there like shells, dead crab shells, and seaweed. As we collected we made our way back to the boat. We got back on board and left to return to the dock. On the way back home we talked about what we found on the beach. It was a very fun day on the boat and the island. I found out some pretty cool things.
